In May of 2021, just before turning seventeen, Melissa’s life was turned upside down. She and her fifteen-year-old brother were called to the principal’s office where a social worker informed them that they would be entering foster care.
“I was petrified,” said Melissa, “I didn’t know what was going to happen to us. We were taken with nothing except the school supplies that we had that day and the clothes on our backs.”
A little over a month later, Melissa and her brother entered CCC's care. CCC found them a loving home where they could stay together. “In my foster home, I learned a lot of valuable life lessons. I learned that, to care for others, I need to care for myself." Melissa’s confidence grew. She learned about good hygiene and started coming out of her comfort zone.
“I started loving myself,” said Melissa.
CCC’s case worker, Samantha Hubbard, visited Melissa and her brother each month. “I loved working with Melissa,” said Hubbard. “She was always positive, kept a smile on her face, and always willing to work on whatever she needed to work on.”
With the support of CCC and her foster family, Melissa got her first job, a driver’s license, and graduated early from high school and enrolled in college.
Melissa now works with an organization committed to advocating for children in the foster care system. “I share my story and other kids’ stories to see what laws should be created,” explained Melissa. “I’m grateful for all the opportunities I have had through foster care. I hope my story helps kids that need some comfort as they go through the foster care system.”
CCC provides foster care services in Richmond, Roanoke, and Norton.
