Jim & Chitralekha
Dear Expectant Mother,
Hello, and thank you for reading our letter. We understand that you are in the process of making a very difficult decision. We hope that this little photobook, that introduces us as the possible prospective adoptive parents to your child, will help make the process a bit easier.
We are Jim and Chitralekha; we’ve known each other for twenty years and have been married for seventeen of them. We are not just husband and wife, but also best friends and confidants. We have lived in Williamsburg for over a decade and have a lovely home in a diverse neighborhood, wonderful jobs as College Professors, and the loving support of an extended family in the US and in India.
Now that we are settled into our careers, we feel the time is right to share our lives with a child. Besides us, our entire families are waiting to envelope the child in warmth and safety. When we think of having a child in our lives, we think most often of sharing with him/her our walks in the woods, our picnics by the York River, our travels all over the world, our love of books and education, and our adoring families.
Kids and young people enrich our lives every day. We enjoy spending time with our niece and nephew, who visit us often, and with our students, who have taught us a lot about openness and acceptance of difference. In India, Chitralekha’s parents’ house is always bustling with the activities of kids, many of whom are tutored by her mother from a very young age and eventually sent off into the world. Our travels all over the globe to visit family and friends have also helped us meet diverse people and participate in their traditions.
Being a part of the lives of so many people across cultures and countries, and in an inter-racial relationship ourselves, has given us a unique perspective on raising a child of any race. We expect our child to open up a whole new world to us, even as we introduce him/her to our world. We look forward to learning about a new culture from and for our child. We would be honored to bring your child into our lives and hope that you can see us as the child’s forever family.
Thank you for considering us as your child’s adoptive parents, and we wish you the very best in whatever decision you make.
